Album Review:Black Fucking Cancer – S/T

When I first stumbled upon a band with a name like, Black Fucking Cancer, I kind of knew right then that I would love this band. And, lo! I did… very, very, VERY much. It always saddens me when a kick ass band name is lost on a mediocre, by the numbers group with no tangible sense of what makes a great song. Thankfully, ‘BFC’ is not one of these at all despite their sound definitely emulating other groups inhabiting their genre. Having released a smaller demo prior to this monster, BFC’s self titled LP was released off Osmose Productions on June 24, 2016. This is a pretty new band, which makes the quality of the release that much more impressive.

Black Fucking Cancer are black fucking metal, plain and simple. From the get go, the listener is assaulted by a wall of ravenous blast beats and buzzing guitars, however the band finds a way to carve out a sound that is their own within a style that so easily and rapidly breeds bland copycats. Right from the start of this titanic record, the band instill the bile of hostility into your veins with a dirty black metal attack that sounds as if Tsjuder was dropped in raw sewage! It fucking slays, as these guys are razor sharp on their instruments, almost always flying forwards at breakneck speed. However, one of the true merits to be noted in this album is how straight up catchy it is! Honestly, a band can be as brutal as any other, but it wont mean anything if no one likes listening to it. Black Fucking Cancer take you to school on how to tear your skin off while loving every second of it.

One of the defining features while listening to the record was the amazing balance between the raw guitar and bass sound. Typically, I find a lot of more raw and lo – fi sounding black metal sacrifices the bass guitar punch, but somehow BFC have struck the perfect in – between, riding a fine line between having guitar strings that garrote you with frosted steel wires, as the bass line smashes you in the gut. The combination makes for an aura of cold evil merged with flaming hot violence. Fire and Ice in sonic form…FUCK YESSSSS!!!!!!!

The only down side to the record is the length of some of the songs, given their fast and furious approach. At times, the blazing pace of BFC’s sound is stretched over 10 minutes, which honestly be wearing. Although, to counter this con, there are some juicy chunks of eerie noise ambience that make up parts of the longer songs such as a large portion of SinnRitualVoid, which starts you off floating in the upsidedown negative – zone, leading up to the moment when a hellish astral tear swallows you whole and plummets you back down into Hell. So the longer song length isn’t always a negative, however you might find yourself thinking that some of the tracks are a bit longer than warranted. Or maybe it’s just me…

Oh, and did I mention this album has some hellish, eye melting cover art from one of THE titans of modern metal visuals, Paolo (motherfucking) Girardi!!!!!!!??????? It has gotten to a point where if an album has a cover by this man, then it warrants a listen, no questions asked. And this is truly a cover that compliments the sonic contents: vile, destructive, perverse, nihilistic. What more could you want!?

It absolutely floors me that Black Fucking Cancer haven’t gained more widespread recognition for this album. If they have, then I have yet to hear about it. This self titled LP is no doubt one of THE lesser known gems of 2016, and deserves way more hype. Fans of groups such as Tsjuder, Gorgoroth, and 1349 will find much to chew on here.  I am still waiting to be able to buy some killer merch from these guys, whether via the web or even at a live gig, if I would be so lucky.

Here’s a link or two!
